Epic games have announced a new franchise called fortnite, a cartoony TF2 Toy Story visual style game. Go see the video here:

http://www.shacknews.com/article/71511/ ... -new-title

Given the available rendering quality it makes sense to see AAA houses going cartoon and spare themselves the negative "expert gamer" backlash by attempting a shot at a more realistic rendering approach.

I'm amazed how much a game like Fortnite looks like Toy Story 1 - what once and not long ago was a stunning offline rendered animated movie is now almost achieved in real time on consumer level computers - think about it and it becomes more awesome.

I may get a lot of flack for this but, I think it looks a bit naff... I dunno, maybe I'm just being butt hurt they never showed Unreal 3 with a Na'Pali setting, but.. It just doesn't appeal to me.

Then again I'm one of "those people" who doesn't like Team Fortress 2 either. I can accept the style, and even like it, but the game and stuff doesn't fuss me :S

Have you seen TS1 lately? It's pretty plain compared to even TS2 was much more advanced in the look and complexity!

I prefer the Zelda: Windwaker look though! :)

i don't remember the exact number, but it took like 10 minutes to render one frame for Toy Story.

Exactly - that's the point! We've gotten quite far, but many seem under-appreciative these days...

Steve jobs on Mac's keynote 2001 said that some frames took 24 hours to render (and then he introduced Carmack with the memorable quote "IT'S REALTIIIIIIME") LOL

Actually it's quite common in production to render frames for hours

Yeah. In fact, it looks kinda like it plays like that 2003 Tron shooter Tron 2.0. I really liked that, so I think I'd like this.

Yeah, increasing computing power hasn't decreased rendering times, it's increased complexity of what's rendered. :)

Simpsons was the first to release a motion picture ever put out to the public completely done on computers. Treehouse of Horror IV beat out Toy Story's release by one month + one week.

It would be neat to do the Wall-E Pixar logo in Doom 3. It's updated enough to make it fresh.

This has me interested. Epic have a great team of designers so I'm sure that along with the new look it'll be a lot more than an 'expansion on gears of wars horde mode'.
