Sad news for id + Splash Damage fans !

Doesn't sound sad to me but a success story of a bunch of id modders who worked their butts off, released several commercial titles with the help of their "mentor" (so to speak) and now are on their own, running their own company with a business model they see fit.

Besides, this was kind of a no brainier as id's engines aren't being licensed outside Beth (I'd assume the reason SD got D3 tech was because of Activision).

That's a good thing for Splash Damage and I personally like the Unreal Engine, but the fact that they're leaving id Tech is a little pain in the heart of a techie fan :mrgreen:

Anyway, with this news, we've officially got 2 games based on id Tech (Prey 2, Doom 4) and seeing how the things are turning, it seems that only id will use it: the return to "better" games or the coming changes in id plans ?

They got id tech 4 with Brink because Bethesda was the publisher. They changed to free to play because Brink was a less than stellar game.

Activision was the publisher when Brink was first shown. they didn't loose it because of a contract (I'd assume).

Brink was and is owned by Bethesda. Bethesda publishes itw own games they dont have 3rd parties publish them. SD announced their partnership with Bethesda right after shipping QuakeWars, and after that they announced Brink.

I could of sworn @ QuakeCon '08 I saw Brink+Activision posters but maybe I didn't, I can't find any reference to it on the internet (but that doesn't mean much). All I found was the id with EA as it's publisher & no digital distribution at all of Rage.

according to wikipedia Bethesda is the only publisher of the game. i don't recall seeing "lack of vision" tag on Brink.

ETQW was the last quality game that SD did, brink was horrible. nice ideas thought bad implementation, bad gameplay.
