I just tried the demo,I have to say a fun game.

After I load the map...for about 30 seconds it goes extremely choppy (around 2 fps) Then all of a sudden, picks up and I get 60. It's not a huge problem, just quite annoying and if I can get it fixed then that's awsome, if not then oh well.

My System Specs:

Pentium D 3.4 ghz
ATi Radeon X1950 pro
1.5 GB of RAM
Windows XP

This happens for me with most games based on Doom 3 tech where a large amount of geometry is in use, its just loading the level's assets into video ram, or something along those lines - more apparent with quakewars because of the size of the landscapes being rendered I'd guess.

I had the same problem. Downgrading my Catalyst drivers to 7.7 fixed the problem for me. Please be advised the demo officially requires Catalyst 7.9 or later to load but I managed to run it with the 7.7 without doing anything special. Also, since you have a X1950 (AGP I would wager) you should know that ATI recommends you stick with 7.7 in the release notes since there are (other) problems with that card with the latest 7.8 and 7.9 drivers.

Actually now that I think of it I recall it doing that for Doom3 and Quake 4...but only lasted about 3 seconds or so. If this is the problem then that's cool I guess, better it doing it from the start then as you go...I like smooth gameplay :)

EDIT: Mordenkainen, I'll try that. I never heard that until now, thanks!

For the record Im using an nvidia card and had this problem both ati and nvidia cards in the same places in Doom 3 under the same circumstances.

I notice though you say 30 seconds in your first post, I thought you were exaggerating but it might be a different problem if it really is for that long and not just for a few seconds.

I estimate around 30 seconds, but after that it's smooth as can be with no slow downs till the map restarts.
