Art test or actual content? At the Apple World Wide Developers Conference going on right now:

10:14AM - "So the last couple of years at iD we've been working in secrecy on next-gen tech and a game for it... this is the first time we're showing anything we've done on it publicly." iD Tech 5... "What we've got here is the entire world with unique textures, 20GB of textures covering this track. They can go in and look at the world and, say, change the color of the mountaintop, or carve their name into the rock. They can change as much as they want on surfaces with no impact on the game."

10:16AM - "We're going to be showing on a Mac, PC, PS3, and Xbox at E3, we'll have another Mac announcement at E3." That was it? It was neat, but not really an "announcement."

btw it looks like mad max. the fallout 3 people are not gonna be happy about this. this might be just a racing game though but that would be dumb.

Ima gonna go out on another limb and says "Racooter"

LoL Racooter sound like a Racoon/Rooster :p

is it just me or do those particular shots looks like prey, just a couple of em anyway.

Since the world now has a couple images i think iD should give those images in hi res with the video that was at WWDC

20gb image for everything , hmm is it now time for the multi dvd packages for games?

doubt it , anyone think the compression will b lower than this? currently ET:QW's megatexure images are 400 - 500 megs compressed into the MT format. And they start out at 6 - 8 gbs right? I want more info now. Or gimme ET:QW and ill b quiet

That looks pretty damn good :).
The only thing that scares me a bit is the "20 GB of textures covering this track". Holy Hard-Drive Failure :O

I assume it gets compressed somehow before it's put in the game :). Pretty soft shadows in there too, but from these shots it doesn't look too pretty to be honest, I expected it to be on par with Gears of War, at least.

looks like we may be able to have both soft and hard edged shadow!

Edited:
Image
( to the very right near the cable hanging down , you can see what looks like hard edged shadows. )

Image
( cliffs to the right appear like soft shadows to me! )

Also those balloon's are making me wonder if some sort of cloth or dynamic simulation is in the game.

<See's the balloon deflating and falling over the cliff, hangs for several seconds then slides down into a pile >

I don't see any hard edge shadows, what do you mean? If you mean the "ridge" thing then the shadow directly below it looks soft to me, remember that shadows get harder the nearer the shadow-throwing object is to the recieving object.

what i like best? dude with the big finger glove. I hope they buck the trend and make a high-production value game that doesn't take itself too seriously.

Looks very good. Not the evolutionary leap it used to be but then again, these are different times.

I'm interested to see what type of game this is.

You are kidding right???
I can agree on that the content doesnt look that much better than current gen.

But this quote pretty much sums up on how nextgen the tech really is on a dev stand point.

I'm SOAKING MY FKING PANTS!!!

Quote:
"They can go in and look at the world and, say, change the color of the mountaintop, or carve their name into the rock. They can change as much as they want on surfaces with no impact on the game."

Apparently, John Carmack appeared at Apple WWDC 2007 demoing some new tech stuff they're working on.

Keep in mind, this is a tech demo, so whatever their real current project is, is anyone's guess. I think it was hinted before that it's still going to be an FPS of sorts, so this driving demo is probably a side project or part of the whole.

My Favorite part in this quote is

It looks like what they're *really* been doing here is addressing some of the legacy (and woeeeefully out of date) aspects of the tools and content creation process; to go from what we've known - radiant, modelling doing a lot of things externally - it now looks like they're bringing everything into the fold (GG SplashDamage from being the ones to show that that kind of thing works on this tech).

Also interesting to note the engines name "id tech 5" which certainly fits with what they've been saying recently about separating games from engines naming wise.

Could do with some higher res shots though, reminds me of podracers (Star Wars)

Yup... sounds like better direct editing tools:

Wasn't there a quote in one of the thread about this saying it was a demo made in 10 days?

4 doom3/quake4/prey/etqw
3 quake 3
2 quake
1 doom

does doom go on the list, seeing as quake was the first 3d as opposed to 2.5d engine?
