Hello0o, basically I got this idea to recreate the old board game (and I believe EA did a game version too) Space Hulk, with Doom 3's engine. Those familiar with Space Hulk and the general premise of it will agree that there is no better engine to support the style of game and it's atmosphere.

But, I'm well aware of just how many mods start out with all the promises in the world and that many become defunct, so before I even consider making this an official project, I want to try and establish a small team first. The mod will be nothing overly huge, as basic a conversion as is really possible, I'm already working on FEAR for doom 3 and that's my priority, I was just thinking of setting space hulk up as a small conversion that could be worked on by a relitavely small team. Just think of it the same way band members have 'side project'.

So basically I want to know if anyone would be interesting in giving some spare time to help out with this mod.

I generally saw the game as being played in much the same way as doom, except much more claustrophobic, and MUCH bigger weapons. You'd be playing as a terminator so your movement would be slow and you wouldn't be able to turn and walk at the same time, but you'd have plenty of armor and sum huge ass weapons as back up.

As I said before people familliar with the games will know pretty much what I'm talking about. So if anyone thinks they'd like to give a small hand on this givvuz a shout!

I like how you think koro, you may have noticed ive recently made a similar post about gettting together a team for making a space hulk mod, so far we only have a few members so far, we have a name for the mod and possibly a model of a blood angel terminator on the way. Perhaps we could team im, you can message me on mintydog on yahoo or mintydog21@hotmail.com on msn.
Look forward to hearing from you.

I would like to add, that it might not be the best idea use the game Space Hulk. First, it is based off of Warhammar 40K, that is owned by Games Workshop. Next is the fact that the video game versions were made by EA. Considering how agressive EA can be about defending it's IP, I don't think using the Space Hulk name, or any identifiable creatures to be a wise decision.

On the other hand, it might be fine to just create similar gameplay, just don't rip them off, because they will likely try to shut you down.

Oh, and I'd like to mention that I've been working on an RPG mod that has a top down view, with a point and click architecture. I was thinking about making it a turn-based RPG, but it might be interesting making a game like Space Hulk that is a blend between a tactical game and a shooter. I like the idea of having a pause feature where you can stop the game, give orders, and then resume the gameplay in first person perspective; especially with a replenishing timer that determines how long you can pause. So I might be interested in changing from my initial mod idea to this one.

In the same interest of keeping the game away from EA's IP, you might instead be able to set it in the Doom universe. That way you can control a squad of marines (and they might be able to have differing classes, like medic, heavy weapons, etc) and they would be battling the hordes of hell, but with the same sort of gameplay.

What do you guys think?

Yeah man.. be careful where you step with games workshop.. doesn't matter if your a fan or anything.. they'll shut you down first chance they get.. Take Quake 40k for instance.. that was an awesome mod.. better than any computer game games workshop had made at the time.. Workshop threatened to take legal action, but then the mod team made a deal to sell it retail and share profits. Of course by the time it went retail the game was completely out dated and not a whole lot of people bought it. When Games Workshop disrupted the mods production, it pretty much died right then and there.

dojo i like the top down view idea and being able to pause the screen and give orders. The lisence to make warhammer 40k games (inclusing space hulk) is now in the hands of THQ (i was told this by the lads at WH) and i have recently emailed them asking fi its ok to make such a mod. If all is peachy on their side (or even if not) it might be a good idea if all who have posted in this thread to get together and colaborate our efforts on a space hulk style mod. THoughts?

I just checked out the Quake 40K (it's actually officially called Chapter Honor) website under the FAQ section, and I found a VERY relevant quote:

Chapter Honor Faq wrote:
What about a Space Hulk mode?

Space Hulk mode was cancelled due to licensing issues (EA has exclusive rights to it).

So like I said, you have to tread very carefully. I think the sort of idea that I mentioned is probably the best way to go about it. I think what you guys mainly liked about the game is the atmosphere and the gameplay. It doesn't matter as much that it is based in the Warhammar 40K universe, in my opinion.

here is an extract from an email i got from a chap called Erik at games workshop when i asked him about a new space hulk game
"Thanks for your email. Yes, we all remember Space Hulk fondly! And as
we
re-enter the computer games industry, we're finding that lots of people
in
the industry remember it fondly as well.

Currently THQ has a licence to make games set in the Warhammer 40,000
universe, and have released the FPS Fire Warrior and are soon to
release
Dawn of War, an RTS. There are no current plans to re-make a Space Hulk
game, but it's not outside the realms of possibility either.

Thanks for getting in touch, and happy gaming."

Looks like EA have no say in the matter.

Good luck to you guys in making the space hulk mod. Doom 3's atmosphere and lighting effects is perfect for creating that gloomy atmosphere in SHulk

Try posting in the Mod Market forum. I'd love to help out, but I want to see if I would get my hands all tied down with the other mods I'm requesting to help with atm (plus Real Life TM is rather annoying)
